When Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar best direction of a film (The Hurt Locker) in 2010, it was a huge moment for both women and the entire film industry. Plus, it was great to see Barbra Streisand be jealous for the first time in her life. But, in all seriousness, this was such a huge moment because only three other women had been nominated for best director in 84 YEARS! Behind all the glitz, glamor and fashion of films it is still a male dominated industry. Only 7% of the top 250 top-grossing films released in 2010 were directed by women, 10% were written by women and 24% were produced by women. So let’s look at some of the other extremely important Oscar wins for women in this tough industry in celebration of The Oscars this Sunday.
