I spend a lot of time trying to help people fit in to the office and make friends with their co-workers. After all, if we have to spend ten hours a day with these people, we might as well get along. Forming positive relationships with your co-workers helps business people network, found opportunities outside their company and gain support for big projects. Oh, and I suppose it keeps you happier and less stressed.
So we should all do everything in our power to make friends with the people around us, right? Well, let’s not go too far.
You can never make everyone happy all the time. In the office, there are always going to be rivalries and competitions. Successful business people realize that if you’re going to make it to the top of the corporate ladder, you might not leave a trail of warm fuzzies in your wake. Trying to make that happen would just be a lesson in futility.
It’s important to be polite and respectful to your co-workers, but I think sometimes we expect a little too much of those around us. Sometimes, people need to act in their own best interest, or they simply don’t have the time or capacity to focus on pleasing everyone around there.
In that spirit, here are some annoying office habits that I don’t think you need to feel sorry for. Your peers may not love it, but they don’t have to love everything about you. If you’re an office brown-noser, wear it proudly!
