Take A Cue From Hillary Clinton, Let Humor Help Your Career

Amy Poehler Hillary ClintonFirst she joined in with the TextsFromHillary Tumblr. Then, she brushed off pictures of her having a beer in Mexico. Now, Hillary Clinton has cemented herself as the most likable politician on the planet. Not that anyone is giving her a huge run for her money at the moment, but I think it’s becoming obvious why the Secretary of State has the highest approval ratings in the country. She ‘s figured out how to laugh at herself and join in on the jokes.

Lovable star of The Five-Year Engagement, Jason Segal, has mentioned in interviews how much he would like to work with Hillary Clinton. Believe me, buddy, you aren’t the only one. I’ve been dreaming of that for a very long time. Segal told Us Weekly,  “I just feel like she would be good at comedy. I think you can feel it from a mile away.”

This story probably would’ve stayed in Us Weekly and off of a business website if it weren’t for the masterful way that Clinton turned the comment into a sweet PR opportunity. That smart lady sent Segal this letter:

Seriously, I’m dying just to get a rejection letter from Hillary Clinton. I think there’s a new tumblr in there somewhere.

Even if you aren’t going to start a new internet meme of Hillary inspiration, I think all of us can learn from ability to embrace pop culture and still remain a respected professional. That’s one of the amazing things about this whole “Cool Hillary” trend. We all still completely trust her to handle any and every diplomatic issue that comes her way.

Hillary Clinton has spent years building her own credibility. I can still remember in college meeting Patricia Schroeder, a Congresswoman from Colorado. During a dinner with our college President, someone asked Schroeder’s opinion of the former-First Lady being in the Senate. Schroeder said, “I can tell you one thing, Hillary Clinton doesn’t miss a single hearing or discussion. She sits in with committees that she isn’t on, simply to learn and gather information. She’s one of the hardest working people in Washington D.C.”

That comment stuck with me. And I think that the reputation stuck with Hillary. She’s always been seen as competent and dedicated. Now that she’s added a good dose of humor into the mix, she’s pretty much an unstoppable politician. I think all of us should remember that once you’ve established yourself as a productive and hard-working professional, it’s okay to open up and enjoy things. In fact, it can make you even more attractive.
