Music fans of Justin Timberlake can get excited. After three long years, he’s getting back in the recording studio. But he isn’t consulting with Timbaland and he won’t be releasing a new album. He’s composing the music for Jessica Biel‘s new movie, where she’ll be both starring and producing. In other words, his new fiance will kind of be his boss.
So now seems like the perfect time to discuss collaborating with your significant other.
Let’s face it, plenty of couples meet at work. They deal with the office gossip create lasting relationships. I should know, my husband and I met at work. But we didn’t actually have the same projects. We never had to be a team. We didn’t sit around in the office trying to get work done while we made googley eyes at each other. Basically, we ran in to each other in the hallway. That’s completely different from getting artistically involved in the same movie.
Also, I have to wonder how the power dynamic will play out between this rather secretive couple. I think it’s generally understood that Timberlake is the more successful partner. Even in acting, his recent work like The Social Network and Friends With Benefits has done better than Biel’s New Year’s Eve. Not to mention the whole, ya know, music thing.
Now, Biel will be the producer and in a place to critique and direct her fiance’s work. Sure, it would be wonderful if everything he did was perfect and she could just clap and cheer him on. But this is the first movie Timberlake will be composing. There’s a pretty big chance for growing pains. And then it becomes an issue of a fiance criticizing the other’s performance.
The entire situation just seems so fraught with tension. Even as a woman who worked with her husband, I don’t know that I would be able to work this closely with him. I’m not exactly planning on having him co-write any pieces soon.
Some couples, especially in Hollywood, really seem to thrive on working with their romantic interests. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony might be a perfect example. But they started collaborating from the very beginning, merging their business ventures the minute that they got married. Biel and Timberlake have always seemed to keep their personal life separate from their work, which might be why it’s so surprising to hear about their teaming up now.
No matter what, it will be interesting to see just how this couple navigates working together professionally. So what do you think? Would you consider working creatively with your spouse or significant other? Why or why not?
