8 Simple Steps A New Boss Can Take To Break The Ice

business introductionOh Marissa Mayer, you smart CEO. This competent lady knows just how to break the ice in a new office, especially after all of the fanfare her appointment created.

What did Mayer do? Throw a big party? Buy everyone an expensive pen? No. She walked herself into the Yahoo cafeteria and got lunch for herself.

That’s right, this simple down-to-earth move seemed to be the perfect way to introduce herself to her new employees. It was so effective that it made news throughout Silicon Valley and energized the down-hearted employees of the once-great search giant. One anonymous employee even said, “I think we have a ballgame now! It’s amazing how fast the sentiment changed internally. Everyone [is] ELATED. People I know that were close to leaving (including myself) are now giving it another shot.”

Um, who knew how much a cafeteria Caesar salad could do for a company?

In the spirit of Marissa Mayer, we put together a couple other small ice breakers that can make a big impact for a new boss. These are great ways to introduce yourself to your employees and set the tone for your tenor.

I vote for “Get to work”, with one qualifier: before people want to know what you know, they want to know you care. So, rather than picking the right icebreaking activities, pick the right interpersonal attitude.
