When you think of a model-turned-businesswoman, who comes to mind first? I know there are plenty of models who have moved on past their catwalk days to launch successful clothing or make-up lines. Lots of supers have gone on to host television shows and write books. But there’s one talented smizer who takes the cake when it comes to building an empire after working in fashion. None other than Miss Tyra Banks.
Sure, America’s Next Top Model has become the butt of plenty jokes, and the star’s daytime talk show is no longer on the air, but Ty Ty is doing just fine for herself. She recently graduated from a management program run by Harvard Business School. She launched a beauty website. ANTM is still going strong. Tyra Banks probably one of the most successful former-models on the planet. And it looks like even more of her peers are going to be following in her footsteps.
Coco Rocha, Karolina Kurkova, and Naomi Campbell will all be mentoring up-and-coming models on a new reality show called, “The Face.” Former Top Model judge and photographer Nigel Barker will host the program. It will air on the Oxygen Network.
It’s a smart move for women who are trying to get beyond modeling themselves, getting paid to mentor other young ones. It’s basically the model-equivalent of consulting work. You take your knowledge of an industry and market it as a skill in and of itself. It’s a path that Tyra perfected when she created her reality show.
It’s still left to be seen whether any of these gorgeous ladies will have the business savvy or the skill to actually challenge Tyra as the post-model queen, but it’s definitely true that they owe her for blazing the way. We’ll just have to see who turns their single show into book deals, endorsements and other media deals, as Banks has been able to do.
One thing is for sure, models are making their place in the business world. And we’ll continue to have lessons to learn from them in the future. For now, we’ll all just have to tune in to Oxygen and see which supermodel is able to entertain audiences like Tyra and her smizing.
