Secretary of State Elaine Barrish, Political Animals
Elaine Barrish Hammond: [At the National Zoo, referring to the Elephants] Beautiful creatures, aren’t they? Majestic, fearsome, but still gentle. They move slower than most animals, but they travel just as far. But that isn’t what I love most about them. They are a matriarchal society, and when the males reach their mating age, the females kick them the hell out of the herd.
In the USA miniseries Political Animals which just premiered this summer, Sigourney Weaver plays the ambitious and stately Elaine Barrish. In the series, Weaver’s character accepts the president’s invitation to become secretary of state after she loses the race for her party’s presidential nomination. She also divorces her husband, a former president with a history of infidelity. Hmm, sound familiar? Weaver said, ”We’ve had three remarkable women who’ve been our secretaries of state in our last three administrations, but somehow we’re not willing as a country to elect a woman president,” she says. “And I think this show partially investigates what that’s about.”
