Amanda Bynes has been in the press quite a bit lately for anything but her career. The actress, 26, who has been charged with a DUI and two counts of hit-and-run, has been spotted acting increasingly erratically over the last several months and being involved in a string of car accidents. Plus, she hasn’t appeared in a film since 2010. But in an interview with People today she said ”I am retired as an actor. I am moving to New York to launch my career. I am going to do a fashion line.” Does Amanda really think a career change can save her from her downward spiral?
A fresh start sometimes can be good and maybe a move would help Amanda (plus people tend to drive less in New York City) but it seems like she is just running away from her problems. Amanda faces a maximum punishment of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each hit-and-run count. If convicted of both, she could serve her jail time consecutively. Also, her DUI case carries a maximum sentence of six months behind bars. In Los Angeles, most non-violent offenders are released from custody early due to overcrowding.
Plus, Amanda already attempted a career in fashion and it failed though it wasn’t completely her fault. The line was called Dear and it was for Steve & Barry’s which went bankrupt a few years ago.
There may also be some legitimately successful celebrities-turned-designers that will not appreciate Amanda just claiming she wants to be a clothing designer now. I don’t see Amanda joining the ranks of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen or Victoria Beckham anytime soon.
“In spite of the fact that we can’t recall a single outfit Amanda Bynes has ever worn, she did briefly have a line at the now-defunct Steve & Barry’s in 2007–just like SJP! So we’re going to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. Maybe she’s spent the last two years not acting (and as she claims, not drinking and certainly not drinking and driving) because she’s been sketching out her brilliant fashion fantasies. Maybe she hit someone and then had to run because Mood was about to close in five minutes.”
Unfortunately Amanda has joined the ranks of child stars that have major problems with the law, drugs, alcohol, etc., as adults like Lindsay Lohan, Corey Haim and Dana Plato. It was just odd because she seemed fine until her mid-20′s. Problems usually begin earlier.
Plus, why is she retiring from acting and why are we believing her? She said this in 2010 and then went back to acting. It sounds like she is undecided on what she wants to do, most of the time. If she sticks with fashion great but she built a solid career in acting so it is sad to see her leaving it. She should have just said I am trying to get in fashion. She should not be closing any doors.
