Exhibit #7,849 why you shouldn’t have an affair with an underling at work: Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee has been suspended in the midst of a tawdry scandal that began with his affair with an officer working under him. After his mistress found out he was at a conference with yet another woman, she tweeted a photo of herself with her service weapon in her mouth, and things spiraled downward from there.
The married Godbee and married Angelica Robinson had been having an affair that she tried to end, her lawyer told the AP yesterday. When she found out Godbee was attending a police conference with another woman, she apparently lost it. (Relationships are complicated!) She posted a gruesome photo on Twitter of herself with her gun in her mouth, eyes closed. (I won’t post it here, but the Daily Mail doesn’t have such qualms.)
Godbee, understandably worried that Robinson was suicidal, sent other officers to find Robinson and put her under surveillance. She has now been reassigned to another job within the police department.
Yesterday, Detroit mayor Dave Bing suspended Godbee for 30 days while an investigation of the situation moves forward. “The chief of police exceeded his professional status,” Robinson’s lawyer said. “He’s breached the trust of the department.” He said Robinson’s future in the department is “a little bit uncertain.” Meanwhile, Robinson told a local TV reporter that Godbee is a sex addict.
Here’s the kicker: Godbee was named police chief in 2010 after the mayor fired the last chief — in part, for having an affair with a subordinate. Oh, wait, no, here’s the real kicker: Godbee also had an affair with that exact same woman, before moving on to Robinson.
Oh, well, I’m sure the police department has all this time on its hands because there’s basically no crime in Detroit.
