In a viral video uploaded to YouTube in May with more than 1.2 million views, primatologist Frans de Waal at Emory University led an experiment on Capuchin monkeys entitled the “Fairness Study.” The results? When monkeys accomplish the same tasks and receive unequal rewards, it’s not a barrel of monkeys – those monkeys will barrel towards you in protest.
As de Waal put it in a Today.com article, ” ‘So, this is basically the Wall Street protest that you see here,’ says de Waal, referring to the Occupy Wall Street movement.”
In the clip below, the first time a monkey completes its task, which is having to hand over a small rock to a lab worker, he is paid with a small piece of cucumber. But, when the monkey discovers that his peer is given a grape, which is practically gold in primate currency, for performing the same task – the monkey goes ape sh*t.
Watch as the jealous monkey protests inequality by throwing chunks of the cucumber at the first monkey while pounding the table and the walls of his cage – just in case the lab workers didn’t get it the first time.
