In the annals of sad careers, Anna Nicole Smith had one of the saddest. She dropped out of high school, worked at Wal-Mart and Red Lobster, posed for Playboy, modeled successfully for brands including Guess, then became more famous for A) suing the family of the 80-something man she married shortly before his death and B) toddling around on a reality show under the influence of … something. Most famously of all, she overdosed at 39 in a Hard Rock hotel and casino in Florida. And now her 6-year-old daughter is getting into the Guess modeling game, too. Sigh.
Dannielynn Birkhead is will appear as part of the Guess Kids spring 2013 campaign, which launched in January. The photos released are admittedly striking, with the little girl posing on the beach in a (short!) jean skirt, striped shirt, vest, and hat. “Dannielynn has the same playful spirit that her mother had on set,” creative director Paul Marciano said in a statement. “She is a second-generation Guess girl.”
Little Dannielynn’s dad, Larry Birkhead, was a short-term fling of Smith’s. He’s been raising Dannielynn since Smith died in 2007. He insists that modeling won’t be a frequent activity for his daughter, and that all earnings from the shoot will be set aside for her future. “It’s really a tribute to her mom more than anything. She’s not going to be a model,” he said. “Her mom’s history with Guess was very positive. The ads were iconic and timeless.”
People gushes that little Dannielynn will “following in Anna Nicole Smith’s footsteps.” Let’s hope that begins and ends with the Guess campaign. According to her dad, her long-term career goals are currently to become a doctor, a birthday cake baker, or the owner of an ice-cream truck. That’s more like it.
