According to the Daily Mail, relative newlyweds Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig are close to signing a deal to co-star in a Broadway play. What a fun project for a married couple!
Oh, wait. Hold on. Oh, dear god. The play is called Betrayal and it’s about a woman who has an affair with her husband’s friend. Does no one remember the lessons of Eyes Wide Shut?!
Here’s the Wikipedia summary of the play’s plot, which is so intense I can barely stand to read it, and it’s just a Wikipedia entry:
Inspired by Pinter’s clandestine extramarital affair with BBC Television presenter Joan Bakewell, which spanned seven years, from 1962 to 1969, the plot of Betrayal interrogates different permutations of betrayal relating to a seven-year affair involving a married couple, Emma and Robert, and Robert’s “close friend” Jerry, who is also married, to a woman named Judith. For five years Jerry and Emma carry on their affair without Robert’s knowledge, both cuckolding Robert and betraying Judith, until Emma, without telling Jerry she has done so, admits her infidelity to Robert (in effect, betraying Jerry), although she continues their affair. In 1977, four years after exposing the affair (in 1973) and two years after their subsequent break up (in 1975), Emma meets Jerry to tell him that her marriage to Robert is over. She then lies to Jerry in telling him that, “last night”, she had to reveal the truth to Robert and that he now knows of the affair. The truth however, is that Robert has known about the affair for the past four years.
Weisz would play Emma, and Craig would play Robert.
The play would mark Weisz’s Broadway debut, and because of the stunt casting, it would draw even more attention than that fact alone would merit. She drew rave reviews for her appearance in a London production of A Streetcar Named Desire in 2009.
Working together, day in and day out, would be tough on many couples, even those with strong relationships. Now imagine that your job is going through the motions of a devastating affair and its aftermath, every night and twice on Sundays. I can’t pretend to be immune to the intrigue of watching a famous, sexy celebrity couple perform such an intimate drama. I hope for their sake they know what they’re getting into.
