3 Tips On Moving Up The Ladder At Work From A Sales Expert

Sees-CandyLast Valentine’s Day week, we were lucky enough to talk to someone who knows the ins and outs of our holiday chocolate-buying habits in Office HoursTracy Cioffi is the Vice President of Marketing & Advertising at See’s Candies (Berkshire Hathaway). In her current role, she is tasked with taking the very successful, 90-year-old regional brand nationwide. But before she ended up at this awesome candy company she worked with many different iconic brands including Gap, PacSun and Old Navy. She had some great advice for how she learned to move up the ladder in marketing that can be applied to many different careers. Here are her tips:

Lead with data, not emotion

Tracy admits to being a very passionate, energetic person but she says she has learned to balance that with data. Even if something doesn’t perform as you thought it would, don’t see it as a failure, see it as a result. Learn from it and then move on. Emotion doesn’t belong in the workplace.

Build your PBOD

You need to have an inner circle or Personal Board of Directors (PBOD, as Tracy calls it). Find a trusted group that you can go to for advice and support as you move up the ladder. A lot of people will try to break you over the years, says Tracy and this group will help keep you stable. Let them be the feedback you need.
