7 Men Making Danica Patrick Pole Jokes On Twitter

Nascar driver Danica Patrick made history last weekend when she “took the pole” at the Daytona 500 trials. That’s a racing term meaning she had the fastest time in qualifying rounds, and will start the race this weekend in the lead position. To a lot of douchebags, it’s also an occasion to make gross jokes on Twitter. Let’s shame them!

Patrick has proven herself to be pretty unflappable about nonsense like this in the past. When a fellow driver once joked that she’s an aggressive driver “if you catch her at the right time of the month,” she laughed it off. When a reporter asked her Tuesday if she would kiss “Miss Sprint Cup,” a tradition for Daytona 500 winners, she gamely replied that “there is only one mister I will be kissing, and I don’t think they’re going to be wearing a Sprint Cup suit.” That’d be her boyfriend, fellow competitive driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who is apparently a real person, and not a character in Talladega Nights.

So I guess it’s up to me to be super-annoyed in public on her behalf at the 7 tweeters below, five of whom are men and the other two who are indeterminate (but that didn’t fit in a headline). To the tweet-ers below, including prominent ESPN sports journalist Rick Reilly: Ugh, blech, you’re all the worst.

Well, speaking for myself I wish Danica good luck but I’m not getting swept up in the marketing hype. I read the other day that (IIRC), for the last 10 or 20 years the typical pole sitter has finished somewhere around 13th in the 40-car field. So, being on the pole doesn’t seem to mean much, other than it suggests the driver has a good car, which in turn suggests the driver is representing a good team.
Does that rain on the party? Sure. But it also offers some perspective and understanding if she finishes mid-pack… because, of late, that’s what usually happens at Daytona.

I’m glad my life is no so empty that I could get upset about something this meaningless. I would love to Ms. Patrick win. I think she is a cool, glamorous and an accomplished professional. Much respect. That said, the jokes are still funny if not extremely predictable.
Get over yourself Ruth. Its just the rest of the world living its life without your consent.

I don’t think it was the jokes weren’t funny or unpredictable it’s that yet again, when it’s been a man, no one was joking about a MAN “taking a pole” which my admittedly vulgar mind took somewhere inappropriate. But a woman does and it’s stupid jokes. It’s all just petty bs…but sometimes we have to talk about petty bs to get past it.
