Just about every Friday, I get the 1981 Loverboy song ”Working For the Weekend” in my head, and then hate myself. It’s an awful song. That’s why I loved stumbling across this YouTube-enhanced list at the Pessimist of the 20 greatest work songs. For one thing, because it does not include “Working for the Weekend.” But it does include some classics, like Dolly Parton‘s “9 to 5″, along with some gems I never would have thought of, including Loretta Lynn‘s homemaker heartbreaker, “One’s On the Way.” Oh, and our personal favorite: Uncle Tupelo’s “Grindstone.”
Anyway, take a look at the list, and consider if they missed any great songs about working. Todd Rundgren‘s “Bang on the Drum All Day”?
Just kidding, that song is also awful.
But what about: Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man Blues”?
Destiny’s Child, “Independent Women, Part 1″?
