Matt Lauer interview GM CEO Mary Barra on Today, and instead of asking her about cars, he asked her about motherhood and whether that would make her suck at her job. Wait, what?
In the clip, Lauer asks Barra, “You’re a mom, I mentioned, two kids. You said in an interview not long ago that your kids told you they’re going to hold you accountable for one job and that is being a mom. Given the pressures of this job at General Motors, can you do both well?”
Barra was gracious and replied, “You know, I think I can. I have a great team, we’re on the right path. …I have a wonderful family, a supportive husband and I’m pretty proud of the way my kids are supporting me in this.”
She easily could have retorted with something like, “I don’t know, can you be a journalist and an unwitting, quiet misogynist at the same time? Because the answer is probably yes, which is the same response I’d give.”
Lauer also asked Barra if her CEO position was just to give a maternal image to GM. Dude, seriously? The ever-tactful Barra quipped, “I believe I was selected for this job based on my qualifications.”
Dude, Ann Curry got fired for this crap?
