Kendall Jenner famously went from being a “satellite Kardashian” to being a high-fashion model, and she did it pretty quickly. That pissed off model Arisce Wanzer, who launched a scathing online attack on Jenner, who seems like the least insufferable member of her family.
Wanzer whines a bit about not coming from a place of privilege herself, which is fair. That is frustrating when you see people born rich getting ahead. But then Wanzer just gets catty:
But wait, isn’t that a reality TV star over there in hair and makeup? Yea, that’s definitely a Kardashian or something. What is she doing here? Did she take the subway? Was she at the casting? What agency is she with? I didn’t see her last season … Does she need MORE fame? MORE money? A green card perhaps? Doesn’t she get enough cash from that show that all of ignorant America glamorizes? Didn’t her sister have sex with someone on camera and profit from the video sales to get their family its new line of limelight? This girl didn’t do and doesn’t owe half of what you did (remember, you’re NOT “KJ” in this scenario) to get here today, that much is certain. Her mommy surely called a top agency, got her in the door and the design houses just chose to milk her fame like the cash cow that it is. One by one like dominos from Vogue to Givenchy, fashion is selling out to the ignorant masses for money. What happened to the art, the cerebral part of fashion? Did it really all die with Alexander McQueen? … You’re on to walk in five, so you’re smoking to calm your nerves. You need to ash your cigarette, and there’s Kendall Jenner’s drink. You already feel a bit better.
Before I go any further, let me preface this with the fact that I think the Kardashian empire as a whole is trite, boring, vapid and lame. Nothing anyone in that family does remotely interests me and I could care less about the entire lot of them. I have no vested interest in defending nor attacking them, but I’m going to defend Kendall Jenner here.
Kendall Jenner has and had no control over what family she was born into, nor what her family members did to get famous before she was even in middle school. Slut-shaming Kendall Jenner’s older half-sister because Kendall Jenner got a modeling contract that you wanted is not only sexist, it’s also petty and irrelevant. Just like it’s not Arisce Wanzer’s fault that she may not have been born into ideal circumstances, it’s not Kendall Jenner’s fault that she was born into great ones. You can’t choose your family, your birthplace, your parents, your genetics.
Kendall Jenner isn’t an evil person for following her dream and using available connections to do so. She’s merely a human being with more opportunities than the average person, and she’s using them because she can and because anyone else in her position would do the same. Instead of bullying Kendall Jenner and advocating disgusting behavior like putting cigarettes in the drinks of others of whom you’re envious, take your anger out on those who enable that system to continue being acceptable, like the designers who want cheap publicity from a Kardashian family name—you know, the designers who are behaving exactly the way you are right now.
Alternatively, Arisce Wanzer, you could also work harder or just try your hand at another job. I’d recommend not looking into anything requiring too much thought, consideration, understand, wit nor empathy, though, because you’re going to want to play to your strengths.
