Gwyneth Paltrow, the bane of actual working mothers everywhere, has issues with what she perceives as a gender wage gap in Hollywood.
“Your salary is a way to quantify what you’re worth,” she told Variety (via Page Six). “If men are being paid a lot more for doing the same thing, it feels s*itty.”
She adds, “Look, nobody is worth the money that Robert Downey Jr. is worth,” she says. “But if I told you the disparity, you would probably be surprised.”
Fair enough, but knowing your own worth is important. Did you see Iron Man 3 for Pepper Potts? No? Well, sorry, then Robert Downey Jr. is, in fact, worth at least a little more, for this particular job, than Gwyneth Paltrow is. She’s not the lead in any of the Marvel films in which she stars alongside Downey Jr. A supporting role? Sure, but those don’t pay as much.
Someone who may have more reason to complain? Scarlett Johansson, who stars as Black Widow in the Avengers franchise and hasn’t yet had a breakout film of her own. Downey Jr. is the highest paid of the Avengers cast, and he may not be necessarily as worth it as the badass Johansson, or say, the Adonis that is Chris Hemsworth. But instead of hating on his (and his management’s) hustle, work on improving your own. Perhaps if Paltrow took a break from telling the rest of us how to live like we were born rich and entitled, she’d have room in her life to work on her own craft.
