Matt Lauer was fired from NBC’s iconic Today show following allegations of sexual harassment.
Lauer, who’s been married for almost 20 years, allegedly cheated on his wife with underlings and colleagues, and even had a button under his desk in his office that he could use to lock the door to his “secluded” office so no one could walk in on any shady sexual behavior.
Three women accused Lauer of making inappropriate sexual comments, exposing himself, and sending lewd texts and photos to at least one intern.
A former NBC producer explained to Variety, “There were a lot of consensual relationships, but that’s still a problem because of the power he held. He couldn’t sleep around town with celebrities or on the road with random people, because he’s Matt Lauer and he’s married. So he’d have to do it within his stable, where he exerted power, and he knew people wouldn’t ever complain.”
Sources also claim that Lauer’s behavior was enabled by the network.
“Management sucks there,” a former reporter told Variety. ”They protected the s**t out of Matt Lauer.” Several producers also told Variety that they never spoke about because they were terrified of losing their own jobs, but that everyone knew a lot of shady stuff was going on.
