Mariah Carey had a rough beginning to 2017 when her New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance was plagued with sound issues. The ordeal became an even bigger ordeal after Mimi and her team exchanged barbs and pointed fingers with Ryan Seacrest and the rest of Dick Clark Productions following the debacle. That said, she made a “Triumphant” comeback with her performance at New Year’s Rockin’ Eve last night. Here are a few reasons why lately, everything is coming up Carey.
1. She dumped her seemingly toxic manager …
Mariah Carey’s manager for the last few years, Stella Bulochnikov, seemed toxic: She was a fame-hungry reality show reject turned reality show producer who led a living legend to star in — surprise! — a reality show. Bulochnikov also accused Dick Clark Productions of “sabotage” after last year’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, a claim they pointed out was “defamatory” (meaning, “watch it or we’ll sue your thirsty ass”). Shortly after Mimi fired her, reports that Carey had undergone a gastric bypass procedure emerged. Seriously? Good riddance, wench, and welcome to the Emancipation of Mimi from the Iron Curtain.
2. … and signed with Roc Nation.
Roc Nation is an actual artist management company, and frankly, being in the company of Rihanna and Jay-Z can’t hurt.
3. Her live performances have improved.
Mariah Carey has never necessarily been the best dancer, but she sure as Hell has the best pipes, and she showcased them beautifully in her Christmas residency. The best is yet to come as long as she focuses on what she’s good at. Slay, Queen Mimi!
4. She maintained her signature sense of humor.
