Small Businesses Hiring More Online Workers, But Employees Need To Plan Ahead

Online employees are a smart business move. I’m obligated to say that because I’m an online employee. I work for this wonderful media company without ever entering their offices. (Though I did stop by once on vacation. It was so nice to see you guys!) Financially speaking, contracted employees have some major appeal. They rarely get healthcare benefits, paid vacations or retirement packages. It makes them a logical choice for many small businesses who can’t afford to have high levels of overhead. And according to Reuters, more and more companies are beginning to take advantage of these modern employees, online employee. In fact, a recent survey shows that 83% of small business owners are planning to hire half of their employees online in the upcoming year. Yay for contract workers like me!

But all of those cost-cutting advantages of online employees mean that workers need to be planning ahead on their own. More »
