The Best Songs About Working

The Best Songs About Working

Just about every Friday, I get the 1981 Loverboy song ”Working For the Weekend” in my head, and then hate myself. It’s an awful song. That’s why I loved stumbling across this YouTube-enhanced list at the Pessimist of the 20 greatest work songs. For one thing, because it does not include “Working for the Weekend.” But it does include some classics, like Dolly Parton‘s “9 to 5″, along with some gems I never would have thought of, including Loretta Lynn‘s homemaker heartbreaker, “One’s On the Way.” Oh, and our personal favorite: Uncle Tupelo’s “Grindstone.”

3 Inspiring Moments In The Beyonce Documentary

Saturday night, HBO aired “Life Is But a Dream,” a documentary about Beyonceproduced by Beyonce and directed by Beyonce. Beyonce was also pretty much the only person who spoke. It was pretty self-indulgent. As the Fug Girls tweeted, “I would rather hold out for the Beyonce documentary that isn’t directed and produced BY Beyonce.” And, you know, fair enough. Here Is The Job Posting That Would Have Let You Work For Beyoncé

GQ’s recent cover story on Beyoncé revealed that the woman is not just a pop star, not just a mom, not just the wife of a superstar, and not just the owner of a cosmetology school (?!). She is also the relentlessly precise cataloguer of her own life. In a sleek Manhattan office, she maintains a “long, narrow room that contains the official Beyoncé archive, a temperature-controlled digital-storage facility that contains virtually every existing photograph of her, starting with the very first frames taken of Destiny’s Child, the ’90s girl group she once fronted; every interview she’s ever done; every video of every show she’s ever performed; every diary entry she’s ever recorded while looking into the unblinking eye of her laptop.” Well, who doesn’t? But an archive like that doesn’t just pop into existence. And now we know how that archive came to be. Behold, the online job posting for Beyoncé’s personal archivist. More »

Blue Ivy Event Planner Tells Us Beyoncé's Lawyers Are 'Terrific People'

Veronica Alexandra wants to set the record straight about her relationship with Beyonce: “There was no lawsuit,” she told me Wednesday. Alexandra seems angry about much of the media coverage of her entanglement with the singer and her husband, Jay-Z, who tried — and failed — to trademark their daughter’s name “Blue Ivy.” That just happened to be the same name Alexandra had given her event-planning business back in 2009.
