Unless you strike gold with your career path at the age of 23, chances are you will find yourself transitioning in and out of companies. Saying goodbye to the people and places to which you have contributed your time can be nerve-wracking, exciting, or emotional; but regardless of the circumstance, it is important to transition out of a company with the same appreciation and grace with which you came into it. Topic: personal brand
The ability to build a business doing what you love feeds your soul. But the personal brand marketplace is getting crowded inside a torrent of social media one-upmanship.
How do you distinguish yourself, your product, and make money (our favorite part) in such a saturated marketplace? More
Well, when I need fashion inspiration I often turn to one of my favorite fashion blogs, MyStylePill.coml, created by Christine Cameron. Her trendy and eclectic style always points me in the right direction. And clearly I am not the only one who feels this way as Christine has 7,287 Twitter followers and 2,638 people like her Facebook page. But how does one turn a passion for fashion into a profitable blog that has major brands like Coach and Steve Madden working with her? We talked with Christine about how she made My Style Pill her career. More
Us Weekly just confirmed that Jessica Simpson is pregnant with her second child, only seven months after giving birth to her first daughter, Maxwell Drew. It apparently was a surprise but I can’t help but think that this is excellent timing for Jessica considering she just got paid for her Weight Watchers campaign. She now can get media attention for the pregnancy, gain weight again and get a bigger contract with Weight Watchers. More
Having a strong personal brand that you can cash in on as an expert is not just for people like Oprah, Madonna or Martha Stewart. It’s for everyone. It’s for you. Branding yourself is an internal journey that leads you to toward taking specific and intentional action to become the biggest and brightest “you” that you want to be. Are you ready for a sitcom based on the teachings of Martha Stewart? Well, get ready for one. According to Deadline, Martha Stewart is producing a sitcom with Fox called The Tao of Martha. The show is based on Jen Lancaster’s upcoming book Tao of Martha, which sounds quite a lot like Julie and Julia except instead of Julia Child, the young women worships Martha. I have a feeling this could do very well considering how many worship Martha Stewart. More
It was just announced that Jennifer Lawrence will be the new face for Miss Dior’s Spring/Summer 2013 handbag campaign only adding to the slew of opportunities thrown her way since starring in The Hunger Games in March. We decided to take a look at some other female celebrities’ endorsement contracts with major companies to see what it did for their careers. Jennifer could be next.
This may go on my Top 10 list of random collaborators. WWD is reporting that Rachel Zoe and Jockey are working on a line together now. “Style starts from within, and having the right foundation is critical to the ultimate success of your outfit. I love marrying comfort with style, and this new collection by Jockey does just that,” said Rachel in an official statement. That is true. The right underwear can completely set the tone for an outfit.
In a new interview with Forbes Jenna Lyons, Chief Creative Officer of J.Crew, said she works with a very talented group of people who are also all extremely attractive. She said it’s not a prerequisite at the company, but good-looking people tend to work there. Is this one of the secrets of J.Crew’s success making the catalog look like it came to life in the store, complete with models and all? Jenna said not intentionally.

Rosie Pope says she wants to be the “Martha Stewart of Motherhood.” Yes, this is a lofty goal considering Martha Stewart’s net worth is estimated to be approximately $712 million and her media empire includes a television show, a magazine, books, housewares and a Sirius Satellite Radio channel. But if anyone can do it, it is Rosie Pope. After all, did anyone even know what a baby concierge was five years ago? And now it is part of the vernacular. In just a few short years Rosie has built a tremendous brand of motherhood that includes education, fashion and preparation advice and products. With her reality show on Bravo, Pregnant in Heels, fashion lines (she owns two stores and has a line with Destination Maternity and A Pea in the Pod), her education center for moms and moms-to-be, Mom Prep, and now a book, she is quickly becoming the go-to source for mothers everywhere. After so much build up, Katie Holmes finally made her New York Fashion Week debut with her clothing line Holmes & Yang. The show by Holmes and stylist Jeanne Yang on Wednesday, featuring their spring/summer 2013 line, was a low-key presentation at New York’s Lincoln Center, with models standing in the center of the room rather than walking a catwalk. The show received fine reviews but it definitely had a ton of attention. I wonder why? More
Umm, does Jessica Simpson have a lawyer? You’d think a woman who runs a nearly billion-dollar fashion empire would have a lawyer to look over contracts because this seems like a detail you’d want to look over a few times. On the premiere of Katie Couric’s new show Katie, Jessica told the host she won’t receive the any of the money from her $3 million deal with Weight Watchers until she reaches her target weight. More
The moment is almost here. Jessica Simpson is about to reveal her post-pregnancy baby body on the Sept. 10 premiere of Katie Couric’s new talk show, Katie. She’ll also appear in Weight Watchers ads beginning next week. She is apparently only 10 pounds away from her pre-baby size which makes the $4 million dollar deal she signed with Weight Watchers even sweeter. Though there was some doubt that Jessica would not lose the weight in time, clearly Jessica had her eye on the prize. The is baby weight loss compensation will just be another part of her business empire. More
I have always given Tyra Banks credit for being more than just a pretty face. Once a teenage model, Tyra now runs a media empire. I have commended her for her choice to pursue education and really understand the business side of her job but the recent news that she lied or rather embellished about her Harvard Business School degree is so disappointing. She once said, “There’s a difference between a career and a business. I’m not looking to build a company based on fans. Don’t chase the money, even if you want to be a banker. Chase the passion. Chase the dream.” Yeah Tyra. But don’t chase a dream if you are lying about it on the way there. More
