One of the greatest scenes from the movie The Devil Wears Prada is during the opening credits. You see a few different women getting ready for work and the differences are astounding. Three women who look like models (but I think they are supposed to just work in fashion) wake up super early to give themselves a full face of makeup (eyelash curlers are involved), gorgeous hair and a stunning outfit. Then they have a half of sip of coffee and are on their way (not eating breakfast does save you time.) Meanwhile young, naive and healthy weight for her height Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway) has probably gotten an extra hour or two of sleep as all she needs to do is throw on a plaid skirt, sweater and those hideous shoes that I wore everyday in 7th grade. Did she even brush her hair for that interview? Probably not as she was too busy stuffing that giant bagel in her mouth.
Eventually, as we all know, Andy does become one of those women that wakes up early to make sure she looks perfect and selects an amazing outfit because it is necessary for her to get ahead in her career. But do other women feel that sacrificing sleep to spend more time on one’s appearance for work is essential for their career? More »
